We believe in Serving The Whole Student, and so our blog is geared towards striking a balance between the challenging world of education and the emotional support kids need in order to reach individual achievement.
In January 2013, Christine Terry set forth on a quest to combine her passion for advocacy with her love of education. She founded Terry Tutors on the premise that education in all its forms really does open doors, bringing with it possibilities for gratifying change and personal fulfillment. From food stamps to a law degree her personal story is prima facie evidence that with dedication, an underlying passion for change, and plenty of good-old-fashioned hard-work those possibilities can become a reality. Christine truly loves helping others realize their inner potential and the possibilities that await them: “To be a part of a student’s ‘ah ha’ moment is the best feeling in the world because I know I’m helping that student build foundational confidence that will lead to a successful path, not just in school but throughout life!”
Christine holds a B.A. in Psychology from North Park University with relevant coursework in Child & Adolescent Psychology, Psychological Testing, Educational Psychology, and Experimental Design. She has subsequent training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy but embraces a combination of both ABA and Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) as the basis of her work with younger students in her Family Coaching and Tutoring practices. Christine is also a former professional nanny. Christine regularly attends conferences to gain new insights and skills that will help her understand how best her students learn. In April 2013, Christine attended the Autism Partnership Teaching Social Skills That Changes Lives Workshop, where she gained new insight into teaching The Hidden Curriculum using the Discrete Trial Training methodology, one she employs with students who are experiencing various behavior challenges in and out of the classroom. Additionally, Christine obtained a J.D. from Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where she elected to concentrate in Litigation. She received the highest marks in her Legal Writing, Alternative Dispute Resolution, Pre-Trial & Trial Skills, and Client Counseling courses. During law school she volunteered at several non-profit organizations, including The West Michigan Hispanic Center, Mississippi Center for Justice, and AmeriCorps. She completed her externship in Immigration Law and then clerked at Queen City Law in New Zealand, where she gained invaluable international justice experience and became a published writer for the NZ Lawyer Magazine. Her human rights efforts have been recognized by the national chapter of Equal Justice Works and The Human Rights Project in Los Angeles.
